Aimee Day
paintings Aimee Day is an emerging artist, having exibited previously in coffee shops. Her statement about her work befits the entire group show. "The female figure is the most enduring subject in all art; some of the earliest art yet discovered depicts the female form, and certainly it hasn't declined in popularity since. We don't know the gender of those earliest artists, but without a doubt, most more recent artists have been men. The majority of images of women we see, from icons such as the Venus di Milo to women in cigerette ads have been crafted by men, presenting us to ourselves from a fundamentally different (not to say alien) perspective. As women, we have learned to see ourselves through other's eyes, through male eyes, not just in our western artistic tradition, but in our everyday lives. This is one of the reasons I paint women. I am curious to find out what we look like when we depict ourselves, what we look like through our own eyes." "The other reason I paint women is so that I will always have a model at the ready. Plus, they're really pretty." |
