Swimming Paintings

There are two endeavors in my life that buoy me up to a state of transcendent bliss: painting, and swimming in the cold ocean. I am fortunate that the first is my vocation, and that the second is so close to where I live and work.

My great-great grandfather was a Danish seaman who, as family lore maintains, used to swim around a tall ship with a brick in each hand. When I first attempted his workout, I could barely swim twenty strokes with these masonry paddles. I can now manage nearly a mile, and intend to break that record by next summer.

I do this because it is hard. I swim in Puget Sound in all seasons, comforted by the cold that numbs the aches of middle age. With bricks in hand, I feel strong and young again. I defy the impossible. I turn obstacles into assets.

These paintings are a record of struggle and triumph, and of our most primal urge: the urge to breathe, and to live.
